Manufacturing & distribution

Practical AI for work that has to keep moving.

Improve the operational workflows behind orders, reporting, knowledge and coordination - releasing capacity, protecting margin and keeping people in control.

Recognise the work

Where operational time disappears.

These are common opportunity areas, not promises of a predetermined solution. The right starting point depends on your workflows, systems, data and people.

01 - Reporting

Information rebuilt by hand.

Teams spend hours assembling updates from spreadsheets, emails and systems instead of using the information to improve throughput, cost and margin.

02 - Orders & suppliers

Chasing replaces control.

Status checks, supplier follow-ups and customer updates rely on memory, while delays and expediting can quietly erode service and margin.

03 - Knowledge

Answers live in people’s heads.

Procedures, product knowledge and problem-solving experience are difficult to find, especially across shifts, sites or changing teams.

04 - Coordination

Routine handoffs create friction.

Repeated data entry, inbox routing and cross-team updates slow work down and make preventable errors more likely.

What better looks like

Release capacity. Strengthen the operation.

The goal is not automation for its own sake. It is to improve the work, release people for higher-value judgement and show whether the investment is strengthening service, capacity and margin.

01 / VISIBILITY

Faster operational insight

Reduce time spent assembling information so teams can focus on what it means and what to do next.

02 / FLOW

Fewer avoidable handoffs

Use proportionate automation to move routine information while keeping escalation and accountability clear.

03 / CAPABILITY

Knowledge people can use

Make approved operational knowledge easier to find without pretending every answer should be automated.

04 / RETURN

Value you can measure

Baseline time, cost and operational performance, then test whether released capacity or reduced friction produces a credible return on investment and margin benefit.

Responsible AI in an operational environment

Governance that supports progress.

Manufacturers and distributors depend on reliable processes, clear accountability and controlled change. An AI system can affect operational decisions, customer commitments, supplier relationships, commercially sensitive information and the work people perform.

Ben combines practical experience of leading complex operations and management-system disciplines with accreditation as an ISO/IEC 42001 implementer and auditor. Aptimate can therefore help build proportionate AI controls into the work from the start - clear ownership, documented risks, human oversight, monitoring and continual improvement - rather than adding paperwork after deployment.

Where an organisation already uses established management systems, Aptimate considers how AI governance should align with ISO 9001 quality-management processes and ISO/IEC 27001 information-security controls, including data access, confidentiality, integrity, availability and supplier risk.

Aptimate can also help your organisation implement an AI management system and prepare for independent ISO/IEC 42001 certification.

Ben Walker, founder and CEO of Aptimate

Built from operational experience

Led by someone who has run the work.

Founder and CEO Ben Walker brings 15 years of executive leadership across manufacturing and consultancy, including Managing Director and Operations Director roles leading complex operations, multidisciplinary teams and organisational change.

As a qualified teacher and experienced sector leader, Ben understands that implementation succeeds only when people understand the change, can practise new ways of working and know where human judgement remains essential. Aptimate therefore treats communication, training, coaching, feedback and adoption support as part of the process itself.

Ben is an accredited ISO/IEC 42001 implementer and auditor, and studies AI through the Oxford Artificial Intelligence Programme at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.

This experience shapes Aptimate’s approach: commercially grounded, accountable and designed around how work actually moves through people, processes and systems.

Recommended first step

Start with an AI Snapshot.

For £950 fixed, Aptimate will review the operational problem, identify practical AI opportunities and quick wins, and give you three to five prioritised recommendations. Each opportunity is considered against likely value, effort, risk and potential ROI, including where it could protect or improve margin. If deeper discovery is justified, the full Snapshot fee is credited when an AI Opportunity Assessment is booked within 30 days.
